Step One / Obtain a Federal Pin
|
• If you don’t already have a PIN, you can visit www.pin.ed.gov to apply for one.
• Both student and parent(s) should obtain a PIN. **If you have a PIN and do not remember it, they will resend it to you.
• Allow 7-10 days for your PIN to be mailed to you or 24 hours if you provided an email address. If you want a Student Loan and are a first
time borrower, you will need a PIN to complete the electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN).
• Make sure you remember your PIN and don’t share it with others.
With your PIN, you can...
• Electronically sign U.S. Department of Education documents, including your FAFSA and electronic loan promissory notes.
• Check the status of your submitted FAFSA. If your FAFSA has already been processed, you can review the results, and correct your information.
• Request a duplicate Student Aid Report (SAR).
• Reapply for financial aid.
• View information about federal loans and grants you have received.
Step Two / FAFSA on the Web
|
1. Open your browser and go to www.fafsa.ed.gov.
2. Select “Fill Out the FAFSA”, then follow the on-screen instructions to fill out the application. Contact your Financial Aid Office to obtain Federal Code.
3. If you need help while you’re filling out your FAFSA, click on the “Chat” link on any application screen to chat online with a Customer Service Representative. You don’t have to exit the application to go to a phone to receive fast, courteous, real-time help.
4. Review your answers and, if necessary, make corrections before transmitting your application.
5. Signature Options
If you have a PIN, you can electronically sign your FAFSA. Parents with PINs can also electronically sign (if you don’t have a PIN, you can apply
for one now by going to www.pin.ed.gov). You can print a paper signature page from FAFSA on the Web, sign it, and mail it to the address provided.
You can transmit your online FAFSA without electronically signing. The Federal Central Processor will send you a SAR in the mail requesting signatures. Sign and return the SAR right away so that NCCC’s Financial Aid Office can continue to process your FAFSA. This signature option adds approximately two weeks to your processing time.
6. Once you’ve decided how to sign your application you will need to transmit it by clicking on the “Submit My FAFSA Now” button at the bottom of the screen. You will be taken to a web page that confirms you have successfully transmitted your FAFSA. Make a note of your confirmation number and your estimated Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The Financial Aid Office will use your EFC to determine the types and amounts of aid you will receive.
7. You should receive a SAR acknowledgement in the mail about two weeks after submitting your online FAFSA. If you provided an email address on your FAFSA, your SAR will be emailed to you.
8. If you do not have a PIN when you submit your FAFSA, the Federal Central Processor will automatically mail one to you around the same time they
send your SAR. If you provided an email address on your FAFSA, your PIN will be emailed to you.
Step Three / NYS TAP Application
|
After you complete your FAFSA:
• Read the Confirmation Page.
• Click on the highlighted link under “New York State Resident” and complete “TAP on the Web”. Contact your Financial Aid Office to obtain your
Federal Code. If you are a transfer student and have already completed your FAFSA and TAP applications go to www.hesc.com under “Managing Your Loan
or Grant” and Contact your Financial Aid office for your new Federal Code.
Note: If you do not apply for TAP electronically by linking from the FAFSA Confirmation page, you will be mailed a postcard with the application website address or paper Express TAP Application (ETA) to be completed and submitted to New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.
